A "team sport" does not equal corporate teambuilding

"Anyone can play softball!  Even you--now go stand in right field and leave the real players alone."  

We do not do that.  Nor do we suggest that as a teambuilding strategy.  

Slapping a company t-shirt on an appropriate mix of male and female coworkers does not create a valuable teambuilding experience.  Sure, it's a different experience from workday tasks, and it's in the great outdoors.  But has anyone ever learned anything from playing softball with a work team?  Or rather, has anyone ever learned anything positive from that experience?  It might be fun, for some, but certainly not for all.
